Since January 2011 when Team DTU was formed to participate in the competition students have been working on various aspects of the construction and architecture, performing calculations and getting advice from the industry partners. The concept chosen for participation in the competition, FOLD, is inspired by a folded piece of paper. It gives both opportunities in terms of creativity in architecture and design, and some challenges in making this innovative construction. The result of a year’s theoretical work on the concept was presented on December 5th 2011 and gave a start to the construction of the 1:1 FOLD mock-up in a workshop on DTU campus. During December 2011 and beginning of January 2012 the construction group of team DTU together with professional carpenters have been working on construction the mockup. This was an intense time for the team, since all the students were having exams at the same time: the construction process took place also on the weekends and during students’ free time. To thank the team for all those efforts put into construction and celebrate this important milestone, Team DTU members along with professors, academic staff, industry partners and other guests gathered at the mock-up on January 16th for Rejsegilde – topping-out celebration. Several speeches held at the ceremony emphasized the importance of participation in Solar Decathlon for DTU, the great work done by the team and gratefulness to all who support Team DTU in this project. The celebration finished with informal networking with drinks and traditional Danish pølse.
